MESA, Ariz. — A youth football tournament at the Arizona Athletic Grounds was abruptly canceled Sunday afternoon after a violent confrontation during a game led to at least one person being stabbed, according to the Mesa Police Department.
Police and emergency crews were dispatched to the complex along South Ellsworth Road shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, following reports of a large fight. The incident unfolded during an 18-and-under 7-on-7 football game, causing alarm among hundreds of players, coaches, and spectators on-site.
Upon arrival, officers found at least one individual with injuries believed to be caused by a knife. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Mesa Police Department has not released any information regarding the victim’s current condition.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene where a fight related to the game quickly escalated. Early, unconfirmed reports from the scene suggested a possible shooting, but authorities later clarified that the injuries appeared to be the result of a stabbing, not gunfire.
“Police worked to secure the scene and clear the area as emergency personnel assisted the injured individual,” a department spokesperson said. “Out of an abundance of caution and concern for safety, tournament organizers canceled all remaining games scheduled for the day.”
No other injuries have been reported. As of Sunday evening, police have not confirmed whether any arrests were made or released details on what specifically sparked the altercation or the identities of those involved.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Mesa Police Department. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.
