John Sprunger Obituary, Death; Kidron Fire Department Mourns Loss of Legendary Fire Chief John Sprunger After 55 Years of Service

KIDRON, Ohio — The Kidron community is mourning the loss of a local legend, former Fire Chief John Sprunger, who passed away early Monday morning after a lifetime of unwavering dedication to public safety.

Sprunger began his firefighting career in 1959 and was appointed Fire Chief of the Kidron Fire Department just one year later, in 1960. He held that leadership role with distinction for an extraordinary 45 years, overseeing the department’s operations and growth through nearly half a century.

He ultimately retired in 2014 after 55 consecutive years of service, leaving behind an indelible legacy that shaped generations of firefighters.

“Chief Sprunger was the bedrock of this department,” said a current member of the Kidron Fire Department, speaking on behalf of his colleagues. “He wasn’t just a leader; he was a mentor and a teacher. His professionalism, compassion, and deep sense of duty didn’t just guide us—they defined what it means to serve this community. He built the foundation we stand on today.”

Throughout his tenure, Sprunger was known for his calm demeanor, strategic mind, and a profound commitment to the safety and well-being of every resident in Kidron. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from former firefighters, community leaders, and residents whose lives he touched directly and indirectly.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. As the community grieves, they are remembering a man whose life’s work was a testament to selflessness, courage, and an enduring love for his hometown—a legacy of service that will truly never be forgotten.
