
BELLEVILLE, Ill. — The Belleville community is grieving the loss of 18-year-old Shenandoah Burton, who was killed in a shooting late Saturday night, January 17, 2026.
Authorities responded to multiple reports of gunshots in the 1700 block of Jamestown Road around 11:19 p.m. Officers arrived to find three female victims. Burton was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, found inside a nearby vehicle with a gunshot wound, was transported to a hospital for treatment. The condition of a third victim, also located in the vehicle, remains undisclosed.
The Belleville Police Department, taking primary control of the multi-jurisdiction investigation, quickly identified a known acquaintance as the suspect and issued a regional Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert.
The manhunt ended in the early hours of Sunday, January 18. Around 2:30 a.m., authorities in Perry County, Missouri, located the suspect’s vehicle. Police reported that the man had died from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers could make contact.
“Police have confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought, and the investigation has officially concluded,” a Belleville Police spokesperson stated.
