HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — A chaotic chain-reaction crash involving nearly 100 vehicles brought westbound Interstate 196 to a complete standstill near Hudsonville and Zeeland on Saturday, in one of West Michigan’s largest winter pile-ups in recent memory.
The massive collision occurred amid a severe winter storm that blanketed the area with snow and ice, creating near-zero visibility and dangerously slick road conditions. Authorities described the scene as overwhelming, with cars, trucks, and SUVs tangled across multiple lanes and debris scattered over the highway.
“Slippery road conditions caused multiple vehicles to lose control, sparking a chain-reaction collision that rapidly escalated,” a Michigan State Police spokesperson said. “The scale of the incident required a complete and immediate closure of westbound I-196 to ensure the safety of responders and motorists.”
Emergency crews from multiple jurisdictions, including state police, local fire departments, and medical teams, responded to the scene. They worked for hours in freezing temperatures to extricate people, provide medical care, and account for all drivers and passengers involved.
Several individuals were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Authorities noted that, given the sheer number of vehicles involved, it was fortunate no immediate fatalities were reported.
The extensive closure caused significant traffic disruptions throughout the region, with drivers urged to avoid the area and seek lengthy alternate routes.
