EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State University hockey community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Dan Sturges, a member of the Spartans’ 2007 national championship team and a recent key staff member.
Sturges, who died unexpectedly Monday morning, had a deep and enduring connection to the program. After concluding his playing career as a Spartan, his involvement with MSU hockey continued. He returned to the program in 2019 as its Director of Hockey Operations, becoming an integral part of the team’s culture and daily success.
“Dan approached every role here with immense pride and passion,” a Michigan State Athletics spokesperson said. “His tireless work ethic and deep love for Michigan State were evident in everything he did. Whether he was supporting players behind the scenes or helping guide our operations, he worked relentlessly to ensure this program operated at the highest level. Beyond his professional role, Sturges was remembered as a person of exceptional character. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Becky, and an adoring father to their sons.
